No News Is Good News
by Schcenna ANYTOWN, USA. If it wasn't for the Cartoon Network, my television would have been thrown in the dumpster years ago. It's just so depressing cutting on the damn thing now of days. Every news report says the same thing: police shooting, rap star caught up in some more mess, another celebrity arrested for D.U.I. Lord only knows what happened to those West Nile - carrying mosquitoes. Did the snipers kill them too? What happened to all of those killer sharks? Hell, whatever happened to your boy Bin Ladden? I don't know. But what I am quite sure about is that the media has gotten so good that they don't even interrupt the TV shows anymore; they just scroll the bad news across the bottom of your screen like it's the latest stock market quotes or something. They never scroll anything that's useful though. Wouldn't it be great if the occasional "Foot Locker Half-Price Sale Coming Soon" news bit came across the screen? Yeah, imagine that. You might be asking yourself, "Why is this happening?" Simple answer: Because we allow it to happen. My kids voted for the governor and senate during a mock election last November. Did you catch that on the 11 o'clock news? Me neither. But I'll give ABC and CBS the benefit of the doubt. Maybe that was the information they were going to share after coming back from the third or fourth commercial break. You know, right after the sports report. Let's not leave out the radio. Not only do they love reporting sad news, they also share the only correct perspective of it... their own. Its just so depressing. I mean, we went to war because they thought Sadam had weapons of mass destruction which to this day they've never found. Seems to me that if we stop concentrating on things so negative, maybe - just maybe - we can start doing something for ourselves. NBC and CNN feel that it's not their faults. "We just report the news," they insist. Well, at some point, if these stations don't take an appropriate stand on all of this dismal coverage, the sale of DVDs, CDs, and other means of escape are going to skyrocket. Folks simply won't deal with it any longer. I know I won't. Shoot, I just finished watching Sponge Bob... The Power Puff Girls are coming on next! |
